4 state meets usher in spring
Wrestling, swim, fall soccer on TAPPS calendar
With basketball waiting nervously in the wings, the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools begins naming its state championships this week.
Wrestling, swimming and fall soccer teams will begin naming champions for the 2009-2010 seasons, while playoffs begin for boys and girls in soccer at tournament sites across the state.
Mat and tank titles will be decided over the weekend in San Antonio and Conroe with fall soccer and basketball taking over the state sports scene in other venues next week.
In another sidelight, Jerry English is on the verge of achieving his 1,000th coaching victory in University Interscholastic League and TAPPS girls basketball. He coached at Sweeny, Pflugerville and Dripping Springs and the past five years at Faith Academy of Marble Falls.
English's singular accomplishment has been the same as averaging 30 wins a season in more than 30 seasons. The Lady Flames defeated Temple Central Texas Christian on Friday, giving them 10 straight distict victories and a 30-5 record overall.
Heading into this year's playoffs, only one other team -- the Tomball Rosehill Christian -- have posted 30 victories. Tomball has a 34-4 record in Class 3A. The Tomball boys also have a 30-7 record this season.
And, at Sacred Heart of Muenster, Jon LeBrasseuer has taken on a different sort of challenge by coaching both the boys and girls basketball teams. The Muenster boys are 20-2 and the girls are 20-5.
