Vol. I, No. 62 ♦ June 2009 "Convention Issue"
Dedicated to the promotion of private and parochial schools in Texas

The cream of TAPPS rises to the top

Johnnie Henderson was the first Execitive Director of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools. Now retired, Henderson and his wife, Evelyn, live in Forney. The award is named in his honor.
There is only one champion in each class, but the schools that have established themselves as the overall point leaders in the competition for the Henderson trophy have worked hard to put together programs that will enable them to take a deserving place among the best in TAPPS.

Dallas Bishop Lynch is an 11-time winner, four times in Class 6A and seven as a Class 5A school. Muenster Sacred Heart, a Class 2A school, holds 13 overall titles. The Tigers won 10 times in 2A and on three occasions in 1A.

There are a number of other schools who have been multiple winners of the TAPPS title, including Hallettsville Sacred Heart, which has won eight times in Classes 4A, 3A and 2A. .Addison Trinity Christian was a winner  twice as a Class 5A school and four consecutive years in Class 4A.

Bishop Lynch showed unusual balance by scoring points in 18 of 24 events to edge runner-up Fort Worth Nolan Catholic 110 to 83. Dallas Ursuline Academy, an all-girls school, equalled the Friars in state titles with four, but placed third with 64 points.

Argyle posted 91 points in Class 5A to win easily over Tyler Grace with 60 in 4A; Tyler All Saints had a decisive edge in 3A over Arlington Pantego Christian, Carrollton Prince of Peace and Waco Reicher Catholic, who shared second; Hallettsville nipped Shiner St. Paul in 2A by six points, and Universal City First Baptist, boasting five state titles, won by a wide margin over Spring Providence Classical in 1A.

Points were based on team performances in boys cross country,  football, wrestling, boys swimming, boys winter soccer, boys basketball, boys golf, boys tennis, boys track, baseball, girls cross country, volleyball, fall soccer, girls swimming, girls winter soccer, girls basketball, girls golf, girls tennis, girls track, softball, academics and speech, art, vocal music and instrumental music.
