Five schools will share honors as recipients of the prestigious 2008-2009 Henderson Cup.
The Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools has announced Dallas Bishop Lynch, Argyle Liberty Christian, Tyler All Saints Episcopal, Hallettsville Sacred Heart and Universal City First Baptist as co-winners of the award.
Individual trophies to each school will be awarded at the TAPPS' annual awards banquet Friday, June 12, in the Grand Ballroom of San Antonio's Omni Hotel.
The presentation will be the first since the association-wide competition was named a year ago to honor Johnnie Henderson, its first executive director. Henderson is retired and lives with his wife, Evelyn, in Forney, Texas.
The award is given annually to the school in each of the five enrollment classifications that has achieved the highest number of total points in the 20 sports and four fine arts activities sponsored by the association.
This year, Bishop Lynch won among 28 schools in Class 5A, Argyle placed first among 31 schools in Class 4A, All Saints Episcopal was first among 49 schools in Class 3A, Hallettsville Sacred Heart topped the competition for the 58 schools in Class 2A and Universal City was the leader among the 67 schools in Class A.
Presentation of the award will be a climactic event of the dinner banquet at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 12, when the outstanding athletes in TAPPS are honored in the Grand Ballroom of San Antonio's Omni Hotel. The four-day mid-summer get- together of state officials and dignitaries begins Wednesday, June 10 with association meetings and concludes Saturday, June 13, with all-star games at Texas Military Institute.
Throughout the week, the association will conduct meetings to discuss plans for the 2009-2010 academic year. A general meeting of TAPPS members is scheduled at 10 a.m. June 12, in the Grand Ballroom.
